FOCUS: EDUCATION IN COIMBATORE

Textile education

THE Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Textile Management, promoted by the Union Ministry of Textiles in association with the textile industry in 2004, is a centre of excellence for textile-related programmes. According to its director S.R. Pujar, the institute has state-of-the-art infrastructure and the fee, fixed by the government, is nominal.

It offers postgraduate diplomas in Textile Management (two years), Apparel Industry Management (two years) and Home Textile Management (one year). It also offers various short-term programmes and organises regular programmes for industry personnel. Its location in Coimbatore gives the students ample exposure to the industry. They get to do real-time projects, make industry visits and take up practical training.

The institute also has a laboratory equipped with textile and garment design facilities. It also has a placement readiness programme to develop the soft skills of the students. Since its launch, 120 students have passed out of the institute, of whom 115 have found jobs in the industry.
