SPECIAL FEATURE: C-DAC

Serving the public

A Ditital Hearing aid from C-DAC.

Passengers travelling in airconditioned compartments of trains in India will not have trouble identifying, through thick glass windows, which station is approaching or has been reached.

C-DAC's Thiruvananthapuram centre has developed a Station Name Indicator that displays the name of the approaching railway station; this will be located within the compartment.

The Indicator is linked to the Global Positioning System (GPS) of satellites, which can give accurate information of the train's position at all times. The system has been tried out in a few trains and awaits wider deployment.

Another product coming from the Thiruvananthapuram centre is a low-cost, digital, programmable hearing aid. It harnesses a tiny system-on-a-chip that contains over a million separate transistors to create a multi-channel amplifier. The system harnesses advanced signal processing techniques to enhance the hearing experience and has special tools to match individual users' hearing profiles.

C-DAC hopes to transfer the technology to an industry partner for mass production.
